Top 5 Dog-Friendly Vacation Cities in California

Having a dog changes everything. It immediately limits the number of hotels you can book, beaches you can visit, airplanes you can fly, and even some locations are off limits when you have a furry family member. That being said, there are a lot of dog-friendly cities in the U.S. that you should consider visiting with your 4 legged friend. Here is the list-

1) Coronado / San Diego tops the charts for the number one pet friendly city. Every block has a nice sidewalk and almost every hotel will accept pets. People from all over San Diego drive to Coronado for its great off-lease dog beach located at the north island beach. http://coronadovisitorcenter.com/

2) Carmel By the Sea - visit vrbo and you will see that a large number of vacation rentals, bed and breakfasts, and hotels in Carmel and greater Monterrey county have pet friendly accommodations. Like Coronado, Carmel-By-The-Sea also has a mile long stretch of beach where dogs can run freely off-leash. There are also a lot of pet sitters and dog hotels for your friend while you are visiting the Aquarium of enjoying a romantic dinner for two at one of Carmel's many famous restaurants. http://www.carmelcalifornia.com/

3) Aptos - Just south of downtown Santa Cruz, this jem of a town has a 3 mile long beach where your dog can run off leash for miles. Then, at night you can snuggle up with your family over a beach bonfire and smores. One of the only spots left in California that allows a beach bonfire. Here is a link to doggoes.com where you can see more info on Seacliff State Beach in Aptos. http://www.doggoes.com/parks/california/seacliff-state-beach

4) Big Bear Lake - For year round fun at a destination in the Southern California mountains, Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead are the top places to visit. Take your dog to the lake fishing with you or for a fun around the lake. Enjoy the wilderness's crisp air just a couple hours drive from downtown LA. http://www.bigbearlakeguide.com/

5) South Lake Tahoe - With many pet friendly accommodations and numerous outdoor activities Lake Tahoe is playground for adults and dogs alike. If you talk to the locals they might even tell you where to take your pet for a dip in Tahoe Blue. Here is a link to visiting Lake Tahoe http://www.visitinglaketahoe.com/

Helpbags Launches Startup Dogs Meetup group

# Startup Dogs - Monthly play date and networking event

We are building community through social events. Bring your dogs and business cards. We provide the dog poop bags. My wife and I have come to realize that almost all startup founders, investors, advisors, and entrepreneurs have one thing in common - we all have a 4 legged friend who we love taking for walks and socializing. Some of them even get to come into the office. We are combining the two loves of our life: taking our dog out to socialize and talking with other like-minded individuals about our businesses. It is amazing, even with the internet being full of information and answers, just how much you can learn from a short conversation with someone who has been there before.

A Little about us: I am a Stanford grad, x-national water polo team member, Hungarian pro league, and Helpbags founder. My wife is from Hungary and is currently the HR Generalist at Euclid Analytics. Our puppy Opihi is 4 years old and a havanese that we rescued from Debrecen, Hungary while we were living there. We are the luckiest couple because we take him with us everywhere. We look forward to meeting everyone at the first event being held at the Redwood Shores dog park in Redwood City.

Helpbags expands to the Pacific Northwest

Bellevue, Washington's A Plush Pet located in the greater Seattle, WA area just became a Helpbags partner. This is a big step for Helpbags as we continue our expansion across the country. Yappy Hours are Trending

From San Diego all the way to San Francisco a new activity that is fun for both you and your four legged friends is becoming trendy. Yappy Hours are targeting couples of all ages to bring their pups and join in on the fun. Yappy hours are usually outside in an area well suited for schmoozing and sniffing with fellow dogs and dog lovers. Most will include drinks and hors d'oeuvres for both dogs and their owners. Dog treats and flavored waters are usually complimentary. We encourage you to attend and don't forget to take your Helpbags with you just incase ;), you will love the experience. Here are some Yappy Hours that we encourage you to enjoy. Just make sure your pup is over 21 and that he only has one drink per hour if he is going to be the #DD (designated driver).

Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay, CA - Monthly Yappy Hour usually held the 3rd Thursday of every month from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. $5 entry fee per dog for costume contest, entry fee donated to The Peninsula Humane Society more info

Mike Hess Brewing Company San Diego, CA - Pints for Pitties Yappy Hour!! Monthly, usuall from 4:00pm to 9:00pm Furry Foster throws a party to celebrate the favorite breed of the month. This past month was the pit bull and all bully breeds! more info

clovertone-the-deaf-dog.png

This recent increase in yappy hour offerings is a direct result of dogs and cats becoming more and more of a family member. I am sure that no-one 50 years ago would have predicted there would ever be such a thing as yappy hour. Stay tuned for our next blog on pet friendly bars. Although not a full yappy hour, still fun to bring your pup along for a little early evening fun.

Thank you everyone for purchasing Helpbags and believing in the cause. Please continue to spread the word.

Thanks, Thomas

First Dog to climb Mt. Everest - A rescue named Rupee

It seems like every day animals amaze us with their adversity, drive and ability to accomplish anything they put their mind to. No matter the challenge, whether it is finding the hidden treat, breaking into the food bin, escaping the house, or just hoping up into your lap after a long day at work. Rupee the rescue from India did just that but on a much bigger stage. This 11 month old rescue became the first puppy to climb to base camp of Mt. Everest - 5,364 meters (17,000 ft).

Rupee's owner Joanne Lefson is an avid supporter of rescues and saving animals. She even wrote a book "Around the world: My travels with Oscar" to spread awareness for sheltered animals. Her book can be found on amazon. Join the cause and do something outrageous with your furry friend. Let everyone know by posting it on your facebook. Together we can join in Joanne's belief that every life is important and worth saving.
